Recent Programmes

This program teaches self-defence methods for women who are disabled. The program was first introduced in September 2006 by Lydia la Riviera-Zijdel.

Over the past 16 years Lydia has taught more than 7,000 disabled people (mainly girls and women) self-defence, empowerment and mobility and survival trainings.In 2008, the WSFFM in collaboration with the Women Win organization have ventured into a partnership to extend these workshops for a wider spectrum of women.

Thursday morning 22nd May 2008 PART I 10.00 – 11.15 = 1 ½ HOUR

Introduction

o Welcome
o Short explanation about the course and the teachers present
o Rules and regulations during the course
o The course plan
o Role of the PA’s, the teachers and the assistance during the course and in the breaks
o Why self-defence for disabled women
o Introduction of all participants and teachers with a name circle and some information about herself
o Introduction of the head teacher

Thursday morning 22nd May 2008 PART II 11.45 – 13.30 = 1 ¾ HOUR

>> First round of techniques: Wheelchair attack to the shin-bone and kicks to the shin-bone/knees on striking pads and in the air. Elbow attacks and Eye scratch

Thursday afternoon 22nd May PART III 15.00 – 16.30 = 1 ½ HOUR

>> Warming-up and Warming-up game

>> Basic-techniques in small groups
o Elbow techniques
o Balance
o Techniques to eyes, knees, throat
o Techniques against striking pads
o Combination of techniques
o Wheelchair and/or crutch techniques
o Techniques for blind women with their sticks

16.30 – 17.00 Coffee/Tea Break

Thursday afternoon 22nd May PART IV 17.00 – 18.30 = 1 ½ HOUR

>> Release techniques:
o One wrist grab attack
o Two wrists grab
o Bear hug from behind (two arms around the arms and body of the partner)
o Double handed throat grab from the side
o Double handed throat grab from front
o One arm strangle grab around the throat
For women with crutches or sticks the crutches and sticks are used to release!

Closing of the 1st Day Self Defence Course for Women with Disabilities

Friday morning 23rd May PART V 10.00 – 12.30 = 2 ½ HOUR

>> Assertiveness and empowerment games

>> Various awareness exercises (where are people in the room; how many are behind you; what can you use as a weapon in your house; who will and who will not attack; entering a disco/circle or party)

>> Role-plays: Give assignments and regulations for smaller groups

Teachers will be present in the smaller groups as facilitators (listening)as a learning process to understand the stories!

>> Blocking techniques against punches and/or kicks
